Here’s a bit of good news to start the week… The U.S. has seen a record season in sales for snow sports gear. There was a total of US$3.3 billion in sales made – $300 million up on the previous record set over the ’07-’08 northern winter. Chris Clark, the director of marketing for skiing/mountaineering company Scarpa said, “… In general, sales mirrors snowfall. DC have unveiled their new logo last week. The flag design was a huge change for the brand and anyone who’s seen footage from Street League last weekend can see how well this is going to work for them – the crowd was filled with crew waiving the flag! Rip Curl announced they had purchased the 19 store Victorian chain, Ozmosis. This is the second major retail acquisition for Rip Curl and follows a big industry push into retail over the last few years led by Billabong who has purchased major chains world wide over the last year and a bit. I’m not sure how long this trend can last but I would suggest to any small to medium size chain stores – now is the time to sell up. I don’t see this kind of battle over floor space lasting …

The French owners of brands like Puma, YSL and Gucci look set to buy Volcom in a deal worth US$607.5 million. PPR have offered US$24.50 per share for 100% of the company – the deal has been unanimously recommended to shareholders by the Volcom board. The deal values founder and CEO Richard Woolcott’s piece of the company at over US$60 million – not bad at all! There is more information due this afternoon but the press release announcing the merger is below the cut.

Kr3w have released two limited edition tees with life size portraits of Antwuan Dixon and Lizard King on the under side. They will be available in stores pretty soon.

According to NYdailynews, Jay Z’s music publishing company, Roc Nation, is being sued by Volcom for trademark infringement. Volcom claims they have spent over US$100,000,000 developing the logo as a clear symbol of the brand and that the Roc Nation diamond is likely to cause confusion between the brands …

Ken Block has had a pretty gnarly crash while on a demo rally in Portugal. He seems to walk away okay but his Fiesta RS is totaled and that means he wont be competing in the Rally of Portugal. Looks like a pretty expensive hobby to have.

The founder of Skullcandy, Rick Alden, has made a surprise move this morning giving up his CEO role just before the companies US$125 million IPO. According to reports, the role is being taken up by the well qualified president of the company, Jeremy Andrus. The company is due to make a statement shortly.

Volcom has hired Dougall Walker to replace John Clapham as CEO of Australia. Walker comes with over a quarter of a century of industry experience starting with an 18 year stint at Billabong where he rose to the position of General Manager for Australia.
