X-Prize – Race to the Moon!

spaceship_one_cockpit_in_flight.jpg

I’m posting this purely because I think it is cool, and I think most people will too. In 2004, the X-Prize foundation, put up a non-governmental funded $10million prize for the first commercially funded team to get a vehicle into space twice within two weeks. There is an amazing video about the guys at Scaled Composites that won it here (you have to install DivX web player, but it goes for an hour so it’s worth it. Be quick cause the site is getting shut down tomorrow). Anyway, the X-Prize foundation has announced the next project, dubbed the Google Lunar X PRIZE which is a $30million dollar award to the non-government group that gets a robot on the moon, drives it around for 500m and sends back video and photos. I don’t know about you, but to me that sounds like so much fun. There is no way you could do that for $30million, so your really doing it for science, rather than the money. I mean, I’m geeking out on the team names alone…My money is on team Astrobotic!
