Release:

While all the snowboard industry was looking to New Zealand last weekend for the Burton NZ Open, Australia’s up and coming snowboard talent got together at Perisher for the annual Teenage Rampage Australian Junior Series.

Over 80 grommets from all over Australia and overseas competed for top honours, with a strong team of young rippers from Mammoth Lakes California and over 20 kids from Victoria participating in the two day event in Slopestyle and Halfpipe (with a BX event held two weeks ago at Thredbo included in the series).

With perfect blue skies on Perishers front valley the standard of snowboarding was exceptional in all events with many stand out runs. In Slopestyle it was all smiles for 15 year old Perisher rider Billy Hayman, spinning a huge cab 9 off the final 40 plus foot jump in his second run. It was easily the best trick thrown down on the day. Billy took out the 13-15 category and also won the Halfpipe event for his age.

16 year old Melbourne rider, Iver Lynne, also put together a run of technical combos including a switch back 540 and f/s 720 along with Jackson Collings riding super clean to stomp a 720 and 360 in his run both making the podium in the 16 – 18 Senior Youth Slopestyle.

In the kids Halfpipe brothers Cameron and Luke Staveley dominated the 11-13 category with Cameron landing some big frontside 720’s to come in 1st with little brother Luke coming in 2nd with straight airs above the lip of the 18 foot pipe.

Sam Murphy NSWIS Halfpipe Scholarship holder took out the Senior Youth Halfpipe with massive clean spins easily head high out of the pipe with technical combo’s that gave him the the best mens score of the day.

In the senior youth women’s Steph Magiros rode clean with big grabs to take the podium in Slopestyle while in the youth Halfpipe 15 year old Lauren Staveley showed why she is the best female junior halfpipe rider in the country with frontside and backside spin combo’s that scored the highest women’s score of the day.

Not to be overshadowed by the best junior riders in OZ and overseas, there were many competitors on the day who competed for the first time. Being a grass roots event the course offered a big line and a small line so riders of all levels could enjoy freestyle competitive snowboarding while having fun and even making some new friends.

With a BBQ both days and tons of prizes, from the following sponsors Vodafone, Ocean & Earth, POW Boardstore, Freestyle Max Aust & NZ Snowboarder the event is not to be missed next year with a Victorian leg at Mount Hotham Vic. The Australian Junior Series is now the biggest junior Snowboard event in the Southern Hemisphere.
