Olympic Halfpipe Area Looks Bare

Update: Boardistan have a post from the pipe builders up who have started construction.  The guys at Boardistan have heard from “… reliable sources that Cypress Mountain is buying snow from Mt. Baker, trucking it over the border and using it to build the pipe.” Check their update here.

(Photo: Scott Serfas on Transworld) Just came across this article and the above photo on Transworld. I mentioned the NPR article back here about the concerns around the weather on Cypress mountain, home of this winters Olympic snowboarding events. Well, Transworld photog Scott Serfas lives in the area and snapped the above photo from lower down the mountain – he wasn’t allowed anywhere near the site possibly due to the current round of bad press the event location is getting. Currently the guys over there are shifting hay bales and building some wooden structures then topping those structures with snow trucked in from other parts of the mountain to reduce the amount of snow needed for the events. Cathy Priestner Allinger, the Vancouver Organizing Committee executive vice president for sport and games operations said in an email to the NYT, “This is a normal course of action in temperate conditions, and we have all the technology, equipment, people and expertise to deliver the Games.” Head over here to see the Transworld article, and here for the NYT article.
