Street League Stop 2 And Championship Table

Okay, I’ve been hanging out for this… Here’s the Championship table and full scoreboard from last weekends Street League stop in So.Cal. Sean Malto is going to be paying off the mortgage on his home in Kansas City after taking out the win. Malto was setup to be the guy to beat after he got the first perfect score in Street League, landing 21 out of 21 tricks in the qualifying round. The finals came down to Chaz Ortiz and Malto when a miscalculation on Ortiz’ part saw him attempting a backside crooked grind on the outer rail and having to bail, scoring a 0.00 and effectively handing the win to Malto. Malto landed a backside over crook on the same rail for his final trick, giving him a 5.5 for a total of 120.4 – 2 points over Ortiz.

Best trick bonus’ went to Greg Lutzka in the Creative Section with a frontside 270 noseblunt slide netting him a 6.6. In the line section, our own Shane O’Neill took the $5k for his nollie flip noseslide then big spin frontside bluntslide scoring a 7.2. The Tech Section bonus went to Chris Cole for a frontside 180 to switch backside crooks (5.6 points). The Big Section and Overall Best Trick was all Ryan Sheckler with his backside 360 over bump and hubba (7.3 points).

As mentioned in my previous post, consistency jumped by around 10% in stop two and I think these figures will remain fairly high as the scoring system beds down. The riders will be realising that the number of runs they take will affect this and they will be adjusting their strategy accordingly. Average tricks landed dropped a little but is still sitting around 4.5 to 5 for the top of the table guys.

Shane O’Neill came in 8th for the stop but holds 4th spot on the Championship table. He is 38 points off the top of the table which is still held by Nyah Huston on 350 points.

The final stop at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, NV is happening on Saturday September 25th and is shaping up to be an amazing wrap on the first Street League season.

Check back for a video update soon.

SEAN MALTO WINS SECOND STOP OF STREET LEAGUE DC PRO TOUR FUELED BY MONSTER ENERGY; NYJAH HUSTON LEADS OVERALL POINTS

Street League television specials begin airing on ESPN2 this Wednesday, Sept. 15

ONTARIO, Calif. – In front of a near-sellout crowd at Ontario’s Citizen’s Business Bank Arena, 21 year-old Sean Malto captured stop number two of the $1.2 million Street League DC Pro Tour Fueled by Monster Energy.  Malto’s first-ever professional contest victory came in a nail-biting final over Chaz Ortiz (age 16) and netted the young pro from Kansas City, MO a $150,000 first place prize, the sport’s richest payday, while Ortiz earned $80,000.  Detailed results and ticket information are available at www.streetleague.com.

The Street League Tour now moves to its final 2010 destination at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, NV on Saturday, Sept. 25.  Fans of Street League can catch all the exciting action every Wednesday at 8pm ET/5pm PT, from Sept. 15 to 29.

Even with a stacked field that included Ryan Sheckler, Chris Cole and Paul Rodriguez, Ortiz was the leader throughout most of the finals due to his consistency and deep bag of tricks, but Malto remained within striking distance heading into the big and final section. Ortiz’ streak of 21 consecutive tricks ended with his first attempt, and the door opened a little wider for Malto.  The crowd roared with approval as the two traded places between first and second as the contest came down to the last trick for each skater, Ortiz holding a slight lead.

Malto landed a backside over crook on the outer most rail for his final trick, bumping his score up 5.5 points for a total of 120.4 overall.  Ortiz, the final skater of the contest, was sitting at a 118.4, needing only a 2.0 or better to win the competition; a relatively easy trick score to obtain.  Ortiz chose a backside crooked grind on the same out rail, his truck got stuck and Ortiz kicked away his board along with the $150,000 first place prize.  The crowd went into a frenzy and Malto was rushed by his friends as Ortiz was given a 0.00 for the attempt.

“I knew it was going to happen eventually,” Dyrdek said of Malto’s victory to the crowd.  “You are a truly talented skateboarder.”

“I do that trick a lot in practice and I just wanted to stay ahead of Chaz and keep the pressure on him,” said an elated Malto.  He added, “That much money goes a long way in KC (Kansas City).  It would be great to pay off the place I’m living in and not have to worry about a mortgage anymore.”

“It (the final) was the most nervous I’ve been in my whole life.  I guess I should have gone to school more, I’m not that good at math,” said Ortiz when Street League founder Rob Drydek asked him why he attempted the crooked grind.

Malto completed the first ever perfect heat in Street League skateboarding history Friday when he landed 21 of 21 tricks in his qualifier and wound up with the day’s highest scoring total of 81.5 points.  Saturday started off in the big section for the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ), where Nyjah Huston, Shane O’Neill and Torey Pudwill — the top three from the Phoenix stop — competed for a chance to join the top six qualifiers from Friday.  In the end it was Huston, who landed all 7 tricks with a deep bag of impressive tricks to pull from, who moved on to the finals and edged out Eric Koston who was holding onto the lead in the previous LCQ heat.

Street League’s $1.2 million purse is the largest in skateboarding history and almost double the combined winnings for all other skate contests.   Nearly $400,000 will be awarded at each of the three stops beginning with Glendale, AZ (Jobing.com Arena) on August 28 and followed by Ontario, Calif. (Citizens Business Bank Arena) on September 11 and the finale in Las Vegas, Nev. (Thomas & Mack Center) on Sept. 25.  The competitions will air on ESPN2 every Wednesday at 8pm ET/5pm PT, Sept. 15 to 29.
