Billabong ASP World Junior Championships

Marc Lacomare
France’s Marc Lacomare looking sharp in a bathing cap after a fin-chop resulted in four staples to the head. Lacomare is one of eight surfers remaining in the Billabong World Junior Championships which finish tomorrow at North Narrabeen.

If you’re missing a bit of pro surf contest action, you could do worse than head to billabongpro.com on Saturday morning to check the webcast of the final rounds of the World Junior Championships.

Junior contests are a dime a dozen in surfing but the Billabong World Juniors, held each January at North Narrabeen, is the one that means the most. Although our girls have dominated in recent years it’s been a long time between drinks for the Aussie blokes, with surfers like Julian Wilson, Owen Wright, Wade Goodall and Matt Wilkinson growing out of junior contention without troubling the podium of the most prestigious event for under-21 surfers as far less fancied opponents from around the world have taken the title.

The comp has been running all week at Northy but has been on hold for the last two days as contest director Luke Egan banks on what could be a pretty amazing new east swell which is scheduled to fill in on Saturday morning in Sydney.
If you can’t make it to the northern beaches you’ll be treated to the always-entertaining Brad Gerlach on the mic and some of the best juniors in the world in what could be epic Narrabeen.

There’s just one Aussie left in the draw, Gold Coaster Mitch Crews. He’s got some stiff competition but he knocked Californian super-grom Kolohe Andino earlier in the week so the chips could fall Crewsy’s way.

With the girls run and won and France’s Alize Arnaud beating more fancied names like Tyler Wright and Laura Enever, it’s down to Mitch to fly the flag. Check it out here.
