Without a surfer in this lineup it’s hard to get perspective on how big it is, but those sandy cement grinders are a solid 6-8 feet, and lining up down a sandbank no-one knew existed. Photo: Epicswells.com
It’s beyond rare to see a cyclone in the Indian Ocean, and rarer still for one to sit right in the swell window for WA’s south west coast. But that’s what happened last week. On Sunday, surfers in the Margaret River/Yallingup region woke up to the waves of their lives.
Most of the swell on Australia’s left coast spins up from the south west, so when Tropical Cyclone Bianca rolled down from the north, crew started getting excited (check the post titled Holy Shit! on Taj Burrow’s site).
Coops at EpicSwells.com has been faithfully documenting the Yallingup region for years, and was the man on the spot throughout Bianca’s roll. Check his site here for some properly incredible images, and a cool interview with him on Soggybones, a great lil’ mag that comes out of the south west.
Jay Davies, Taj and a few other local pros were at home for the swell so I’m sure Coops has a few more shots squirreled away that we’ll be seeing more of when the mags come out.
