This is the most argued topic in surf, skate and snow… What are the best parts ever created? As part of 127 Hours release, I was asked to compile a list of my personal favorites. In my opinion, the best parts are a combination of rider skill, good spots, great filming and amazing editing – plus it has to actually make you want to get out and ride. That is what makes a standout, banger section that you will remember for years afterward. Everyone has their favorites and for me, it constantly changes – if you ask me the same question tomorrow, you’d probably get a different answer. But in the mean time, here’s a few to enjoy.
Whiskey – Kris Markovich
This is a personal favourite that a lot of people will disagree with but it is always a part that actually makes me want to go for a skate. Nothing to do with the riding, although it is good, everything to do with the sunny days, familiar spots and Sweet Home Alabama. The Whiskey videos eventually became huge but to get this originally I had to go through an ordeal – still when it arrived with names like McKay, Way, Cardiel, Hosoi, Crum, Hassan and more, it was totally worth it.
Fully Flared – Intro
There’s no doubt this video set a new standard in skate films – something the guys at Lakai/Girl have been doing for a few years now. If I could have posted the whole video, I would have but anyone who made it to a premiere of this flick knows the effect the intro had on audiences. A combination of heros, new talent and Ty Evans at his best made this very memorable.
Let’s Go Get Lost – Fredrik Evensen
The Isenseven guys have been putting out rad videos for over a decade and in the last three years they have really hit their stride and put out some mind blowing clips. It’s not just the riding (or the impressive list of now pros that got recognised from their previous videos) but the attention to detail in the film work and colour, as well as the rider intros. This is one of my favourites.
Rodney Mullen Vs Daewon Song: Round 2 – Rodney Mullen
I can watch Mullen for days, the guy is incredible. I remember the first time I saw this film – back in 1999 working in the shop. It was on high rotation for a long time after and many an injury occurred trying to nail even the simplest of the old-school-rulers moves.
And many of you will know this but as a quick point of interest for those that don’t – Mullen was the main double for Christian Slater in Gleaming the Cube. Check out his work here:
The End – Heath Kirchart & Jeremy Klein
When this video came out, there was endless talk about the budget, production values and special effects. I believe (but I might be wrong here) that this was the first skate video to spend more than a million dollars on creating it – that was the rumour at the time anyway. Kirchart and Klein had probably the most memorable section with their Armani suits on fire and epic locations.
The Resistance – JP Walker
Surf, skate and snow films became notorious for skits between parts which went from absolutely rad, to cringe worthy. This is one of the all time standouts. Great to see JP having fun with it and it set of a trend in snowboarders for buying those C-Class Mercedes for a while.
Picture This – Jeremy Jones
Brad Kremer put his considerable skill with a cable cam to work here gaining some pretty memorable shots, especially over that roof to roof gap. In my mind, this set the standard for the high production value skate/snow clips genre… I don’t think it’s been out done since – even in his follow up to this, Double Decade.
(Starts at about the 3.30 mark but you should watch Heiki Sorsa’s part too – it was a strong contender for a spot)
Yeah Right – Mike Carroll
A banger part from Mike Carroll – what more do I need to say?
Oh, and as a bonus… Here’s Owen Wilson’s ‘part’ from the film as well…
Fulfill the Dream – Chad Muska
Everyone loves Muska – before he was a DJ or doing a bit of cameo acting (see his part in Entourage below) he was winning the TWS Street Skater of the year for parts like this…

The Upcoming Plan B Film – P-Rod’s Part
Unfortunately there is only the teaser available to this one but if you’re a fan of great skateboarding, you’re going to want to buy this. Last November they released the full part from Paul Rodriguez in the lead up to the release of the full film. It is mind blowing – this guy is amazing. Enjoy!
