Australian Olympic Snowboarder On Sochi Anti-Gay Laws

Belle Brockhoff, an Australian Olympic Snowboarder, appeared on Lateline earlier in the week to speak out about the Russian anti-gay laws that may affect some athletes at the games. The Australian Olympic Committee claims that the laws will have no effect on the athletes while Amnesty International claims that athletes “could face a $3,000 fine while foreigners could be detained for up to 15 days and face possible deportation.

Brockhoff is not out to stage a massive demonstration or call for a boycott – she might wear a badge or do some other small protest that lets her feelings be known but she is conscious of not breaching IOC rules … A very measured response that will let her achieve her dream of competing while not having to totally give up who she is to do it.

Congrats to Belle and hats off to her for speaking out. Amazing that a country can still pass laws like this (*he says, while sitting in a country that still passes laws like this*). You can watch the full interview over here.
