Ride For The Earth

RFE team rider René Werner.

Generally speaking, there isn’t much that’s environmentally friendly about board sports. Surfboards contain a heap of toxic chemicals that don’t break down and can’t really be recycled, and in the irony of all ironies, the flying we do to get to resorts in Japan, Europe, Canada and the States is contributing to global warming (and worse snow) quicker than anything else we do.

With this in mind, it’s cool to see a new startup trying to get people in action sports to think about the environment a little more.

Ride For Earth is an organization that helps people plant a tree for every ride they own. Focusing on snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing, wakeboarding, skiing, and other action sports, RFE are a European organization that encourages riders to do something for the environment. Planting trees to offset the carbon footprint generated by living for snow or surf might not seem like a big deal, but you’ve gotta start somewhere, and good on these guys for having a dig. With the support of guys like Terje and Bryan Iguchi, we’re hoping they go on to bigger and better things.
