The Rob Blog: Kids Can Ride 2011

Hey guys, sorry it’s been so long since I’ve done an update. I’ve been back in Melbourne enjoying the family life and also working on my knee, which has now been given the all clear from the doc! Last week we were really lucky to find three awesome kids to participate in Kids Can Ride program. My mate Jay Maxwell, helped me with the trip from picking the kids to coming with me for the few days.

We left Melbourne on Wednesday morning, stopped for some meat pies at the bakery in Mansfield and arrived at Mt Buller around 2pm. After dropping our bags at the Ski Patrol building, which is where we were lucky enough to stay thanks to Mt Buller, we walked down to Black Mountain to hire the kids’ gear. They got hooked up from head to toe. The kids were so keen they put their gear straight on and found a slope where they tried snowboarding for the very first time. They rode down and hiked up for a couple of hours and by the end of the day they already had it dialed. After heading home for a hot shower, the kids and I wondered down to Burger Haus for a delicious burger and fries, then headed back up to the Whitt to watch a bit of TV.

Thursday morning we got up early and were stoked to see some blue sky and the sun shining. We walked down to the Chalet Hotel and, thanks so Chris Redmond, we enjoyed a big buffet breakfast. Once we were finished, it was time to hit the slopes. We went and met Super Coach Tom Richo who kindly donated his time to help coach the kids. After a few hours on Burke Street the kids could already turn, do 180’s and hit the boxes… I was impressed. For lunch we headed down to Wok Works and ate an awesome box of noodles before heading back out.

After a full day of riding the kids were pretty beat. We enjoyed another burger for dinner and had an early night for snowboarding the next day. On Friday, the kids were killing it, I’ve never seen kids improve so quickly. Thanks to super coach Tom Richo, the kids could snowboard the entire mountain, hit the jumps and ride the boxes. We left Mt Buller Friday afternoon to head back to reality, but managed to sneak in a quick stop at MacDonalds for dinner!

We were so lucky to have so many people help out. A huge thanks to Rhylla at Mt Buller, Chris Redmond at the Chalet Hotel, Wok Works, Burger Haus, K2, Black Mountain, Skiing Australia, Billabong and Alice!
