Drink Water – A Public Service Announcement

If you take a look at Drink Water’s reason for existence the first line is “Drink Water is a friendly reminder to drink water.” Amazing! At first glance it looks like a group of guys who are bummed they weren’t able to get their hands on any of that sweet sweet Red Bull Money. When you look a little deeper it turns out the guys have a benevolent agenda.

The rise of the energy drink in action sports it getting out of hand. You can’t watch a competition now days without seeing every rider, while waiting for results, thrusting a giant can or bottle of energy drink in your face. Its always confused me as to whether or not these actually contain anything, surely pro athletes wouldn’t be drinking this stuff while competing. Not to mention the douches who wear the logo’s as if its a badge of honor rather than just the logo of another soft drink company. Fed up with the energy drink BS Bryan Fox and Austin Smith started writing drink water on their snowboards they later moved the slogan onto hoodies and stickers to be passed around to their peers. This month, due to increasing demand they have launched a website where merch can be purchased for those of us who are also feeling disillusioned by the energy drink craze. To give you a little bit of extra warmth inside when you are wearing your new hoodie or T-shirt sticking it to “the man” Drink Water will donate 10% of their profits from sales to water.org. These guys are a not for profit who dig wells for the over 1 billion people on Earth don’t have access to clean drinking water.

The guys also are trying to take a stand against the way our sports are used to market these companies products which the corporations assure us are safe to children and teens. The jury is still out on the effects of drinking them but a lot of people seem to think its not the best idea especially when exercising. They could of been more specific perhaps and said drink tap water as a way of also trying to reduce the tons of plastic bottles put into landfill ever year, but this is a good start.

Pretty sure you will see this story picked up by current affairs tv shows next week to fill their monthly attack on energy drinks killing our kids segment. Now where can we find some snowboarding dole cheats, shop lifting compo fraudsters.
