It’s been one month since the Sochi Winter Olympics wrapped up and if you were wondering what the near-purpose-built city is looking like, these shots will give you some of the story. Blogger Alexander Valov took a load of shots around the athletes villages, hotels and venues – some of which you can see above – and the place is both deserted, falling apart in places and erie in others.
He describes the place as silent – only the occasional sounds of car breaks and an empty bus going by breaking the quiet. Most places are deserted, or at least look it.
The future for the area is somewhat unclear at the moment – some early reports about the excessive infrastructure spending for transport to the area said that the expected use was nearly nil post the games… Railways to nowhere. I think the best thing about these photos will be looking back a year from now and comparing them. Will the place become useful? Or just rot now that the attention has moved to new areas?
