Escramble in NYC

As you’re probably all well aware, it’s premier season for snowboard films right now (both here and abroad). Because my brother lives in NYC I’ve been sending him to some of the premiers that have been going on over there. IR77’s one is coming up next week and Volcom’s Escramble just happened. Anyway my buddy Cody Comrie went along to the Escramble premeir and wrote up a review for POP. So everybody say thankyou to Cody. For the record Volcom Australia haven’t returned my emails or phone calls asking for a preview copy so I haven’t been able to watch Escramble myself. So I basically have no choice but to believe what Cody tells me…

So I was just randomly chillin’ out out in NYC and got invited by this way hot babe from Peru to the Volcom snow Escramble video premier. I had heard nothing about it so I really had no expectations. In all honesty all I really cared about was the open bar and impressing this chick. We showed up late so we missed the open bar, I was pretty bummed out. Then, out of nowhere this random dude manages to get us a couple gin and tonics, we were happy and went into the movie. The movie was an interesting experience, I mean, I was watching it with a girl from Peru and two another ones from Panama. The girls really had no idea what they were looking at so they were just speaking Spanish to each other and giggling the whole time.

I really didn’t get much from the movie itself, maybe I was just distracted by the hot Latin ladies, but it really didn’t grab my attention. There was definitely some good riding, nothing super progressive though. What I did like about the video was the way it was carried out. Not exactly you run of the mill formula, they didn’t introduce any of the riders before there parts and had the riders speak in there native languages. The clay-mation aspect of it was also interesting. When it all came together the whole motive behind the project was basically to raise awareness for global warming. I don’t really get myself involved in shit like that but it did make you think a little. That was cool. Overall I enjoyed the video, it was well done but not a video I would put on to get stoked before riding, or even watch more than a couple of times.

Well, the video ended and I was thrilled that the open bar would continue for another hour and a half. As I walked into the bar I felt like I was transplanted somewhere totally different, like back in Salt Lake City, Utah. Snow-bros were in full effect, rocken’ thick Jackets with their hoods up, it was still like 21 degrees out! I’m not gonna say names, but some of these assholes give snowboarders a bad reputation. Drunk out there minds, harassing girls, basically acting like complete morons. I was embarrassed since my friends had never been subjected to the snowboard scene. I’m sure they were not impressed.

Even with the abundance of douche bags present we still had a good time. The girl I was with apparently loves whiskey and convinced me to love it to, we went through a few round of Jameson on the rocks. By the end of the open bar I was dancing like a jackass with three pretty girls feeling pretty damn good about myself. We ended the night with a rainy cab ride to Yaffa Café, a rad spot on the lower east side. All of us ate way to much food and I think I may have overdone it be eating the sketchy chicken fingers that nobody wanted… I think the night was an overall success, I just wish I could of said the same about the morning…
